Medical Visa to India from Uganda: A Complete Guide for Patients

Getting a medical visa to India from Uganda is more straightforward than most people expect before they try it. The process is online, the documents are manageable, and for most patients the visa is approved within three to five working days. But there are specific requirements that trip people up — wrong form, missing document, incorrect photograph specification — and getting these right the first time saves a week of delays.

This guide covers exactly what Ugandan patients need, how to apply, and how Prime Medical Solutions helps at the steps that matter most.

The Indian e-Medical Visa

The correct visa category for patients travelling to India for treatment is the e-Medical Visa (eMedV). It is applied for and processed entirely online — there is no requirement to visit the Indian High Commission in Kampala in person, though you can if you prefer.

What the e-Medical Visa provides:

  • Multiple entry: up to three entries into India
  • Validity: 60 days from date of arrival
  • One companion (e-Medical Attendant Visa) can be applied for simultaneously

The e-Medical Attendant Visa covers a spouse, parent, or other accompanying person. This is a separate application using the same online system.

What Documents Are Required

Before starting the application, have these ready:

For the patient:

  • Valid Ugandan passport with at least six months validity beyond the intended date of travel
  • A recent passport photograph (specific specifications apply — see below)
  • A hospital appointment letter from the Indian hospital confirming the treatment — Prime Medical provides this
  • The fee payment method (debit or credit card)

For the companion (if applicable):

  • Valid passport with six months validity
  • Passport photograph
  • A letter confirming their role as a medical attendant — Prime Medical provides this

What you do not need:

  • Medical records (not required for the visa application itself)
  • Proof of accommodation (not required at application stage)
  • Bank statements (not typically required, though financial means may occasionally be queried)

The Photograph Requirement — Getting This Right

Photograph specifications for the Indian e-visa are stricter than most people expect, and a photograph that does not meet the requirements causes the application to be rejected immediately.

Required specifications:

  • White or light background only — no grey, no patterns, no outdoor backgrounds
  • Full face visible, no headgear except for religious purposes
  • Eyes open and clearly visible
  • Photo size: 2 inches x 2 inches (51mm x 51mm)
  • Recent — taken within the last six months
  • No glasses (since 2023, glasses are no longer permitted in Indian visa photographs)

Take the photograph specifically for this application. Using an existing passport photo that may have glasses or a different background is a common reason for rejection.

How to Apply

The application is submitted at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Select "Apply Visa," then choose "e-Medical Visa" (or e-Medical Attendant Visa for the companion).

Fill in the form carefully. Common errors that cause rejections:

  • Nationality listed incorrectly
  • Previous visa history not fully declared
  • References section left blank (list the Indian hospital as the reference)
  • Photograph uploaded that does not meet specifications

The application fee is approximately USD 25 and is paid by card at the end of the form. Processing time from submission to approval for Ugandan nationals is typically three to five working days, sometimes faster.

Once approved, you receive a visa document by email. Print this and carry it with your passport when travelling — the immigration officer at the Indian airport scans it on arrival.

The Hospital Appointment Letter — Prime Medical's Role

The single most important document in the application is the hospital appointment letter. This must come from the Indian hospital confirming:

  • The patient's name
  • The hospital's name and address
  • The nature of the treatment or procedure planned
  • The expected dates of treatment

Without this letter, the visa application cannot proceed.

Prime Medical Solutions provides the hospital appointment letter as part of our coordination service. When you engage with us, share your medical reports, receive the specialist opinion and treatment plan, and confirm which hospital you are proceeding with — we request the appointment letter on your behalf from the hospital. This typically arrives within 48 hours of treatment confirmation.

For the companion, Prime Medical provides the attendant letter confirming the person's role.

Timing the Application

Apply for the visa after you have:

  • Received the treatment plan and cost estimate from Prime Medical
  • Confirmed the hospital
  • Received the hospital appointment letter

Do not apply before you have the appointment letter — it is required for the application and cannot be added later.

Three to five working days for processing means: if you are planning to travel in two weeks, apply as soon as the appointment letter is in hand. If there is urgency — a patient who needs surgery quickly — alert Prime Medical and we will prioritise the appointment letter to enable faster visa application.

For Transplant Patients — Both Patient and Donor Need Visas

If you are travelling for a kidney or liver transplant and bringing a living donor, both the patient and the donor need separate visa applications. Both need separate passport photographs, both need their own appointment or attendant letters. Prime Medical provides documentation for both applications simultaneously.

At the Airport in Kampala

Entebbe International Airport is Uganda's main international airport, roughly 40 kilometres from Kampala city centre. For Delhi-bound flights, Ethiopian Airlines operates the most reliable service, connecting through Addis Ababa. Total journey time from Entebbe to Delhi is typically ten to twelve hours.

At Indian immigration on arrival, the officer scans the e-visa and asks standard questions about the purpose of travel and the hospital you are visiting. Have the hospital appointment letter accessible — in your hand luggage, not packed away. The officer may ask to see it.

Prime Medical arranges airport pickup from the Indian airport — Delhi IGI, Mumbai CSIA, Chennai MAA, or whichever airport corresponds to your destination hospital. A coordinator meets you on arrival and transfers you to the hospital or accommodation directly.

Common Questions About the Visa

1. What if my visa application is rejected?

Rejections are usually for fixable reasons — wrong photograph, incomplete form, missing letter. Prime Medical reviews applications where possible before submission to catch obvious errors. If a rejection occurs, the reason is typically communicated and the application can be resubmitted.

2. Can I extend the e-Medical Visa if my treatment takes longer than 60 days?

Yes. Visa extension in India is handled through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in the city where you are staying. This is a straightforward process for genuine medical cases. Prime Medical assists with extension paperwork if needed.

3. Do I need travel insurance for India?

Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended for any international medical trip. Prime Medical can advise on options. Some policies cover medical repatriation if needed, which is worth having for major surgery cases.

4. My passport has less than six months validity — can I still apply?

You need to renew the passport first. India requires at least six months passport validity beyond the date of travel. The Ugandan Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control in Kampala handles passport renewals.

Starting the Process

The visa is one step in a process that begins with shared medical reports and a specialist opinion. If you have not yet done that, it is the logical starting point.

Share your medical reports with Prime Medical Solutions. To book a consultation, call the number on our website. A coordinator will come back within 48 hours with a treatment plan and start the process of getting the hospital appointment letter — so the visa application can proceed without delay.
