Medical Visa to India: A Complete Guide for Ethiopian Patients

Medical Visa to India: A Complete Guide for Ethiopian Patients
The Indian medical visa is the one document that unlocks everything else. Without it, no appointment, no surgery, no treatment. Most Ethiopian patients who contact Prime Medical for the first time assume the visa is complicated. It is not. The application is online, the documents are straightforward, and for most Ethiopian applicants the visa is approved within three to five working days.
What causes delays — and occasionally rejections — are avoidable errors. Wrong photograph, missing appointment letter, incomplete form. This guide covers exactly what Ethiopian patients from Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, Hawassa, Mekelle, Bahir Dar, and across Ethiopia need to get the visa right the first time.
The Right Visa Category
The visa category is e-Medical Visa (eMedV). This is specifically designed for patients travelling to India for medical treatment. It is different from a tourist visa and different from a standard business visa. Apply for the e-Medical Visa only.
What the e-Medical Visa provides:
- Triple entry — you can enter India up to three times during the validity period
- 60 days from the date of first arrival
- One companion can apply simultaneously on an e-Medical Attendant Visa
The companion visa covers a spouse, parent, sibling, or other family member accompanying the patient. It is a separate application on the same portal but submitted at the same time.
Documents Required
Before starting the online application, have these ready:
Patient documents:
- Valid Ethiopian passport — at least six months validity beyond planned travel date
- Passport photograph meeting exact specifications (details below)
- Hospital appointment letter from the Indian hospital — Prime Medical provides this
- Credit or debit card for fee payment (approximately USD 25)
Companion documents:
- Valid Ethiopian passport (six months validity)
- Passport photograph
- Attendant letter confirming role — Prime Medical provides this
The hospital appointment letter is the single most important document. It must be on the hospital's letterhead and confirm the patient's name, the hospital name and address, and the planned treatment. Without this, the visa application cannot proceed. When you engage Prime Medical — share your reports, receive a specialist opinion, confirm your hospital — we request this letter from the partner hospital on your behalf. It typically arrives within 48 hours of treatment confirmation.
Photograph Requirements — Get This Right
This is the most common reason for rejection. Indian e-visa photograph specifications are strict:
- White or plain light-coloured background only — no grey, no patterns, no outdoor photos
- Full face visible, looking directly at camera
- No headgear (except for religious reasons)
- No glasses — since 2023, spectacles are not permitted in Indian visa photographs
- 2 inches × 2 inches (51mm × 51mm)
- Taken within the last six months
Do not use an existing passport photo from a few years ago, especially if it has glasses. Take a new photograph specifically for this application.
How to Apply — Step by Step
1. Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in and select "Apply Visa."
2. Choose "e-Medical Visa" (or "e-Medical Attendant Visa" for the companion).
3. Fill the form carefully. Common errors:
- Nationality must match the passport exactly — "Ethiopian" not "Ethiopia"
- Previous visa history must be declared fully — any previous Indian visas
- Reference in India: use the hospital name and address as your reference contact
- Port of entry: Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) — or whichever city your hospital is in
4. Upload the photograph. The system checks format automatically but not all specification errors are caught — double check before uploading.
5. Pay the fee by card. Approximately USD 25 per application.
6. Submit. You receive a confirmation email with a reference number.
7. Processing: three to five working days for Ethiopian applicants in most cases. During peak periods or if additional documentation is requested, allow up to seven days.
8. Approval comes by email. Print the visa document and carry it with your passport. The immigration officer at the Indian airport scans it on arrival.
Applying from Outside Addis Ababa
Ethiopian patients from Dire Dawa, Hawassa, Mekelle, and Bahir Dar all apply through the same online portal — there is no requirement to be in Addis Ababa or visit any office in person. The entire application is submitted online from wherever you are in Ethiopia.
If you prefer to apply in person or have questions, the Indian High Commission in Addis Ababa handles visa matters:
High Commission of India, Addis Ababa
Kebele 02, Woreda 17, Jimma Road
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
For the e-medical visa, in-person visits are generally not required. Online processing is faster.
For Transplant Patients — Two Visas, Same Process
Patients travelling for kidney or liver transplant bring a living donor — a family member. Both patient and donor need separate e-Medical Visa applications. Both applications are submitted simultaneously. Both need separate appointment or attendant letters. Prime Medical provides documentation for both applications at the same time.
After Arrival in India — What to Expect
At immigration on arrival at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (or whichever Indian airport you land at), the officer scans the e-visa from your printed copy or the email. Standard questions about purpose of visit and the hospital you are attending. Have the hospital appointment letter easily accessible — not buried in your checked luggage.
Prime Medical arranges airport pickup. A coordinator meets you on arrival and transfers you directly to the hospital or accommodation. You do not navigate the airport or city alone.
If the Visa Is Rejected
Rejections typically happen for fixable reasons — photograph not meeting specs, incomplete form field, missing letter. The rejection usually includes a reason. The application can be resubmitted after correcting the issue. Prime Medical reviews applications for common errors before patients submit, reducing rejection risk.
How Long Before Travel Should You Apply?
Apply as soon as you have the hospital appointment letter. With three to five working days processing time, apply at least ten days before your planned travel date to allow buffer. For urgent cases, Prime Medical can request an expedited appointment letter and flag urgency to the visa processing team.
Getting Started
The visa process begins with the hospital appointment letter. The letter comes when Prime Medical confirms your hospital and treatment plan. That confirmation happens within 48 hours of sharing your medical reports.
