Medical Visa to India: A Complete Guide for Patients from Gambia and Uganda

The hospital appointment letter is the most important document. It confirms the patient's name, the hospital name, and the planned treatment. Photograph Specifications — Where Most Rejections Happen

Indian e-visa photograph requirements are precise. Errors here cause immediate rejection:

• White or plain light background only — no grey, no outdoor photos, no patterns
• No spectacles — glasses have not been permitted since 2023
• No headgear except for religious observance
• Full face visible, looking directly at the camera
• Size: 2 inches × 2 inches (51mm × 51mm)
• Taken within the last six months

Take a new photograph for this specific application. Do not reuse an old passport photo, particularly if it shows glasses or a non-white background.

How to Apply

1. Go to indianvisaonline.gov.in

2. Select "Apply Visa" → choose e-Medical Visa

3. Complete the form carefully. Specific points:

• Nationality: "Gambian" or "Ugandan" — must match passport exactly
• Previous visa history: declare any previous Indian visas fully
• Reference in India: use the hospital name and address
• Port of arrival: Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport for most patients. Mumbai CSIA for patients going to Mumbai-based hospitals

4. Upload the photograph. The system performs a basic check but does not catch all specification errors — verify manually before uploading

5. Pay the USD fee by card

6. Submit. You receive a confirmation with a reference number

7. Processing time:

• Gambian nationals: typically three to five working days
• Ugandan nationals: typically three to five working days

8. Approval arrives by email. Print it and carry it with your passport

For Patients Outside Major Cities

Ugandan patients from Jinja, Mbarara, and Gulu: Apply through the same online portal from wherever you are in Uganda. There is no need to travel to Kampala for the application. The entire process is online.

Processing Times and Planning

For Transplant Patients — Double Application

Kidney or liver transplant patients bring a living donor — a close family member. Both patient and donor need separate e-Medical Visa applications, filed simultaneously. After Visa Approval — Arrival in India
