Cancer Treatment in India for Patients from Kampala, Uganda

Cancer Treatment in India for Patients from Kampala, Uganda

Uganda's cancer burden is real and it is growing. Cervical cancer, breast cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, prostate cancer, oesophageal cancer — the diagnoses are common. The capacity to treat them well is not.

Kampala has the Uganda Cancer Institute, which is one of the better-equipped cancer facilities in East Africa. But even here, radiotherapy waits can stretch weeks or months. Advanced treatments — proton therapy, immunotherapy, targeted molecular therapies — are not available domestically. For patients with complex cancers, or those who have had first-line treatment and need second-line options, Uganda's facilities run out of road quickly.

When that happens, patients look abroad. Increasingly, the country they find is India.

Why India and Not Nairobi or South Africa

Nairobi has been the traditional destination for Ugandan patients who need specialist care unavailable at home. Kenya's private hospitals have improved. But for oncology specifically — surgical quality, radiation technology, molecular pathology, immunotherapy protocols — the gap between Nairobi's best and India's top cancer centres is significant.

South Africa's private hospitals are good. They are also expensive. Private cancer care in Johannesburg or Cape Town costs 60 to 80 percent more than India for the same procedures. Logistics are harder for Ugandan patients. And the quality advantage over India is, frankly, hard to justify at that price.

India's advantages for Kampala patients

The cancer technology at Apollo, Max, and Fortis hospitals is the same as UK and US cancer centres — Da Vinci surgical robots, Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators, proton therapy at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, molecular profiling labs doing full genomic sequencing. Treatment costs 40 to 70 percent less than South Africa's private hospitals. Entebbe to Delhi via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines takes ten to twelve hours total — shorter than flying to South Africa in meaningful ways.

All senior oncologists work in English. Ugandan patients have no communication barrier.

Treatments Available in India

Surgical oncology covers the full range — mastectomy, lumpectomy, bowel resection, thoracic surgery, gynaecological cancer surgery, tumour excision. Da Vinci robotic surgery at Apollo, Max, and Fortis reduces blood loss, shortens hospital stays, and speeds recovery compared to conventional open approaches.

Chemotherapy runs on internationally approved protocols. Drugs unavailable or difficult to source in Uganda are standard here. The hospital manages every cycle — scheduling, hydration, antiemetics, monitoring.

Radiation therapy in India uses modern IMRT, VMAT, and stereotactic approaches — precision techniques that significantly reduce side effects compared to older machines. These are not the same machines as thirty years ago.

Proton therapy at Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai uses proton beams that stop precisely at the tumour without passing through healthy tissue on the other side. Particularly valuable for brain tumours, paediatric cancers, and cancers near critical structures like the spinal cord. For patients who need proton treatment, India is the most accessible option outside Europe or North America.

Immunotherapy — pembrolizumab, nivolumab, atezolizumab — available based on molecular tumour profiling. For cancers where immunotherapy improves outcomes, it is prescribed and administered on the same protocols used in the US and UK.

Targeted therapy is guided by next-generation sequencing of the tumour. HER2-positive breast cancer, EGFR-mutant lung cancer, BCR-ABL positive leukaemia — India's labs do the testing and oncologists prescribe the appropriate drugs.

Bone marrow transplant for leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma at Apollo, Max, and Fortis. Both autologous and allogeneic transplants are performed with success rates matching international benchmarks.

Getting from Kampala to Treatment

Send biopsy results, pathology reports, imaging (CT/MRI/PET), blood work, and previous treatment history to Prime Medical Solutions. The more complete the records, the faster a specialist opinion can be formed.

Within 48 hours, the relevant oncologist reviews the case and provides a written opinion — diagnosis assessment, recommended treatment protocol, expected duration in India, and a cost estimate specific to your case.

Ugandan nationals apply for an Indian e-medical visa online. Prime Medical provides the hospital appointment letter. Processing typically takes three to five working days. One companion can accompany the patient.

Ethiopian Airlines connects from Entebbe through Addis Ababa to Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai. Total journey time is ten to twelve hours. Prime Medical arranges airport pickup and hospital transfers on arrival, and coordinates accommodation near the hospital for the duration of treatment.

A dedicated coordinator handles all scheduling, hospital communication, and logistics throughout the stay. Before the patient flies back to Kampala, complete discharge documentation, treatment summaries, and follow-up instructions are provided. Remote consultations with the Indian oncologist can be arranged if needed.

What Kampala Patients Ask

1. How long do we need to stay in India?

Surgery alone: two to three weeks. Chemotherapy: often one or two cycles in India, then return home for subsequent cycles. Radiation: four to seven weeks. The plan depends on the treatment involved.

2. Can a child receive cancer treatment in India?

Yes. Apollo and Fortis both have strong paediatric oncology programmes. Accompanying parents can stay with the child throughout.

3. What about patients who have already had treatment in Uganda?

India's oncologists review whatever has already been done and recommend the best path forward from the current point. Coming with prior treatment history is fine.

4. Is there food support for Ugandan patients?

Hospital canteens serve international options alongside Indian food. The African community in Delhi is established enough that familiar food is accessible for longer stays.
